Roaring Fork Historic District

Roaring Fork Historic District

In the 1880’s the first known settlers moved into White Oak Flats, which is now known as Gatlinburg. Overtime, the pioneer’s descendants moved into the area’s valleys and coves. In the 1830’s, the Bales family moved into the area and began their farm. The Bales family farmed right next to the Reagan Family and by the 1900’s the Reagan’s grandsons began farming along the “Spruce Flats,” a stream area right above Gatlinburg. Today, many of the family’s cabins and barns are still standing at the Roaring Fork. Visit Roaring Fork in the Smoky Mountains and see these cabins and historic buildings for yourself!

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail

The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is an unforgettable journey through the Smoky Mountains. The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail begins near the Rainbow Falls trailhead on Cherokee Orchard Road and winds 3,000 feet up Piney Mountain where you find the first overlook. Continuing down the trail, the road goes into a parking area at the Trillium Gap Trailhead which leads past the Grotto Falls, through the Trillium Gap, and to the summit of Mount Le Conte.  The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail then travels out of the parking area and continues through the Roaring Fork Hollow Historic District and along the Roaring Fork Stream. The trail comes to an end at “The Place of a Thousand Drips,” a narrow waterfall.
